How Memories Into Music began
It started with a conversation in my neighbor's open garage, one autumn morning in Arizona. He was reminiscing about his youth and telling me stories about growing up, and especially about his grandfather. His eyes lit up as he described the man, his special garden, and how he provided for his family.
As I listened, I felt no need to question or discuss anything. I just wanted to hear what my neighbor had to say about someone he loved so deeply.
The whole conversation took less than 45 minutes, and then I said goodbye.
But I couldn't leave those stories alone. I felt a drive to keep them in a way he could return to again and again.
So I turned them into a song.
When it was finished, I crossed the street and told him what I'd done: I'd captured his stories in music, as clear as a pane of glass. Then I played it for him.
And he wept.
Watching him travel back through time that late morning, I knew I'd done more than make music. I had stored his memories, memories that could be shared with his wife, his children, and his friends, and that would last for generations.
That was the moment Memories Into Music was born.
